Impact force reduction by consecutive water entry of spheres

چکیده

Free-falling objects impacting onto water pools experience a very high initial impact force, greatest at the moment when breaking through free surface. Many have intuitively wondered whether throwing another object in front of an important (like oneself) before surface may reduce this force. Here, we test idea experimentally by allowing two spheres to consecutively enter and measuring forces on trailing sphere. We find that acceleration reduction sphere depends dynamics cavity created first relative timing second impact. These combined effects are captured non-dimensional `Matryoshka' number, which classifies observed phenomena into four major regimes. In three these regimes, is reduced up 78\% quiescent Surprisingly, one force dramatically increased more than 400\% worst case observed. explain how various stages evolution result alterations multi-body entry problem.

Water entry of spinning spheres

The complex hydrodynamics of water entry by a spinning sphere are investigated experimentally for low Froude numbers. Standard billiard balls are shot down at the free surface with controlled spin around one horizontal axis. High-speed digital video sequences reveal unique hydrodynamic phenomena which vary with spin rate and impact velocity. As anticipated, the spinning motion induces a lift fo...

Water entry of small hydrophobic spheres

We present the results of a combined experimental and theoretical investigation of the normal impact of hydrophobic spheres on a water surface. Particular attention is given to characterizing the shape of the resulting air cavity in the low Bond number limit, where cavity collapse is driven principally by surface tension rather than gravity. A parameter study reveals the dependence of the cavit...

The Effect of Asymmetric Water Entry on the Hydrodynamic Impact

The effect of the asymmetric water entry over a submerged part of a ship on the hydrodynamic impact is investigated numerically. A wedge body is considered to study and the problem is assumed to be two-dimensional. The Results of symmetric and asymmetric impacts are compared together. The effect is found significant in the numerical simulation. The maximum hydrodynamic pressure at a heel angle ...

Synthesis of Carbon Spheres of Controlled Size by Hydrothermal Method

Carbon Spheres were fabricated by hydrothermal method and their structural properties were investigated. Carbon Spheres with average sizes around of 230, 320 and 430 nm were synthesized in different concentration of glucose aqueous solution and different hydrothermal reaction time. The temperature of 180 °C by a hydrothermal reaction was fixed in all of glucose concentration and hydrothermal re...
